Nd: YAG Laser (Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet Laser)

The Nd: YAG laser (Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet laser) is a highly advanced medical laser used in ophthalmology to treat various eye conditions. Its precision, efficiency, and safety have made it a preferred tool for non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures. Nd: YAG lasers work by emitting a concentrated beam of light that targets specific tissues in the eye without causing damage to surrounding areas. The Nd: YAG laser emits light in the near-infrared range with a wavelength of 1064 nm. This light energy is absorbed by specific tissues and converted into heat, which is used to perform precise medical treatments. The laser can operate in pulsed mode, allowing high-energy bursts to target tissues while minimizing thermal damage to adjacent areas.

Applications of Nd: YAG Laser in Ophthalmology

  • Posterior Capsulotomy:

    • A common complication after cataract surgery is posterior capsule opacification (PCO), also known as “secondary cataract.”
    • The Nd: YAG laser creates a small opening in the cloudy posterior capsule, restoring clear vision without the need for surgical intervention.
  • Peripheral Iridotomy:

    • Used to treat or prevent angle-closure glaucoma, where fluid build-up increases intraocular pressure.
    • The laser creates a tiny hole in the peripheral iris, improving fluid drainage and reducing pressure.
  • Vitreolysis:

    • Used to treat eye floaters, which are clumps of collagen in the vitreous humor that obstruct vision.
    • The laser breaks up floaters into smaller, less obstructive particles, improving visual clarity.
  • Treatment of Glaucoma:

    • In laser trabeculoplasty, the Nd: YAG laser is used to treat open-angle glaucoma by improving fluid drainage through the trabecular meshwork.
  • IOL Polishing:

    • In patients with artificial intraocular lenses (IOL), the laser removes opacities or deposits on the lens surface to restore clear vision.
